Wiawaka Painting Day

Our annual plein air day at the idyllic resort of Waiwaka (located on the eastern shore of Lake George) is always different. Last year our APS member Ingrid Van Slyke demonstrated her process of plein air painting. She discussed all things pastel: different papers, different types of pastels, arranging your pastels, etc. 17 of our members took advantage of this free all-day workshop in 2024. (It is open to non-members for their daily fee of $15.00.) I felt that this was one of our most successful Wiawaka workshops. People worked inside the tent on their paintings as well as the brave plein air people who took advantage of the beauty of Lake George.
This year the workshop date is Saturday, June 28th. It is always a very fulfilling day connecting with our fellow pastel members. All APS members are invited to enjoy a day of plein air painting and socializing. In addition to breathtaking views, there are beautiful gardens and historic buildings to paint as well.
Participants should plan to arrive at 8am or later. The APS will have the Main Tent on the lawn in case of rain, and admission will be covered by APS. A painting demonstration will take place from 10am-12pm.

Based on the upstate NY uncertain wintry weather and member suggestions, we have a great virtual workshop scheduled this winter with award winning artist Karen Israel. The topic will be dramatic winter and autumn landscapes. The fee is only $100 for the day…..PLUS – Karen will provide recordings of her demos and answer follow up questions for two weeks after the workshop.

Let’s get loose and learn to create dramatic landscape paintings that communicate your unique interpretation of an autumn and a winter scene. Starting with a demo and a discussion about design, we will explore composition, color and atmospheric perspective as it relates to landscape painting in the colder months.

We are celebrating our 11th year! This year we lost a beloved member to cancer. We will be showing her work as memorial to her. Jerolyn Ouimet, a Saratoga Artist, who served on our board for 5 years. She was instrumental in helping our organization host Plein Air event at Wiawaka Holiday house and she enjoyed painting there. This annual event highlights our members pastel paintings. Our 44 members span the Adirondack region. Some, are members of the National Pastel Society of America, a prestigious recognition for excellence. Our Reception will be held on Oct 17, 5-7pm with an annual meeting to be convened following the reception.

Annual National Pastel Exhibition at the Shirt Factory Gallery July 10-August 10.
The Adirondack Pastel Society, in concert with the Shirt Factory Gallery once again hosted its Annual National Pastel Exhibition this summer. .
JUROR OF SELECTION, JUROR OF AWARDS: Chris Ivers attained a BFA in painting and two dimensional design from Hartford Art School in 1973 and found work in the advertising field for the last 40 years. She has been Creative Director at numerous ad agencies and in 1986 broke off on her own to start her own company. She works with artists in that cross-over world of fine art and digital photography to teach them how to better promote themselves.

Wiawaka Plein Air Day Saturday June 29, 2019
Members gathered and painted at the historic Wiawaka House on the banks of Lake George for a day of Plein air painting with a show and sale to cap off the day. Painting was open to all members of the Adirondack Pastel Society and the Plein Air Group of the Adirondacks.
